ARE EXTRATERRESTRIALS DESCRIBED IN BIBLE?

Unless you live on the ice planet of Hoth, you know the over-hyped Stephen Spielburg film Disclosure Day claims to raise questions of the Bible’s narrative of creation and the cosmos. Promoters warn this could shatter believers faith.

First, if there are intelligent beings on other planets, we are assured they are creations of God:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

“You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, along with all their stars, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you” (Nehemiah 9:6).

And when Jesus teaches he has another “flock,” we all assumed he was speaking of the Gentiles. Or perhaps something beyond our assumptions.

The “disclosure” of intelligent life apart from homo sapiens is well documented in the Bible!

“The four living beings that looked human, except that each had four faces and four wings.  Their legs were straight, and their feet had hooves like those of a calf and shone like burnished bronze. Under each of their four wings I could see human hands. So each of the four beings had four faces and four wings. The wings of each living being touched the wings of the beings beside it. Each one moved straight forward in any direction without turning around (Ezekiel 4:5-9).

And in the Book of Revelation:

“In the center and around the throne were four living beings, each covered with eyes, front and back. The first of these living beings was like a lion; the second was like an ox; the third had a human face; and the fourth was like an eagle in flight. Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out” (Revelation 4:6-8).

These are stranger creatures that any in Star War‘s Mos Eisley Cantina.

And there are even space craft with crews of human-like creatures that don’t look human at all!

“The living beings looked like bright coals of fire or brilliant torches, and lightning seemed to flash back and forth among them. And the living beings darted to and fro like flashes of lightning.

“As I looked at these beings, I saw four wheels touching the ground beside them, one wheel belonging to each. The wheels sparkled as if made of beryl. All four wheels looked alike and were made the same; each wheel had a second wheel turning crosswise within it. The beings could move in any of the four directions they faced, without turning as they moved.  The rims of the four wheels were tall and frightening, and they were covered with eyes all around.

“When the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them. When they flew upward, the wheels went up, too.  The spirit of the living beings was in the wheels. So wherever the spirit went, the wheels and the living beings also went” (Ezekiel 1:21).

For thousands of years, these strange creatures have been described as symbolic might, in fact, be literal.

One more possibility. Jesus warns in the last days, “there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven” (21:11).

Is it possible the enemy has concocted the whole UFO narrative to cause people to question the Bible. “If there is intelligent life in far galaxies, how does that harmonize with the Creation story?” “Are there other gods in other universes?”

Certainly there are many questions, but none that should shake our faith in Jehovah God as the creator of the entire universe and that he has created all forms of life, human and supernatural.

Notes:

After writing this, I found an amazing essay, “An Open Letter to Steven Spielberg: The Church Already Had Its ‘Disclosure Day’—in 1277” by Bible scholar Leonard Sweet

And even Pope Francis mused about extraterrestrial life. In a 2014 mass, he famously theorized about the possibility of “Martians” coming to Earth and asked, “What would happen if a Martian expedition arrived and one of them said, ‘But I want to be baptized?’”. He stated that he would welcome them into the church.

Then in 2023, he advised to “stick to what the scientists tell us, still aware that the Creator is infinitely greater than our knowledge”.
